As a matter of fact, I am the biggest (and safest) anti-UV granny when it comes to real tanning. I wear SPF 50 and take shade under the palms when I visit my beachy paradises.
Growing up in the UK, the slightest slither of sun would see my pasty, white bod laying face down on a sun bed. Now I live in one of the hottest and sunniest places in the Western world and I'm always covered in sun block. Why? 1 in 3 Australian women will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime.
Fortunately, getting a tan can be easy, safe and is waaay faster then a 2 week wrinkle-causing bake out!
Today I share with you my top tips to get that perfect sunkissed glow, whilst flouncing around paradise in my Black lace swimsuit* from Lookbook Store.
You wouldn't dye your hair without proper preparation right? Well, the exact same concept applies when it comes to that golden glow. If I could scream it from the rooftops, I would: EXFOLIATE!
Stubble Be Gone!
There's no point having tanned legs if they are still prickly! Shave away, using a moisturizing razor.
Scrub DownTo exfoliate my skin, I use Frank Coffee Scrub. This natural, vegan and Australian made, coffee scrub is moisturizing and exfoliating all in one! Plus, it even targets cellulite, making you even more beach ready! I just apply a handful to my hands and scrub away. If I'm trying to remove excess tan, I often use an exfoliating glove and Frank simultaneously.
Bye Bye Mrs Dry
After towel drying, apply a moisturizer to your elbows, knees hands and feet. These dry areas are prone to going patchy and no one wants to look like Donald Trump!
Mitt Is It
Applying fake tan without a mitt is like going sky diving without a parachute; you're asking for trouble! I use the Model Co Blend Buffing Mit and it works a treat.
It's All In The Motion Of The Ocean
For a flawless coverage, apply a dessert spoons worth of tanning product onto your mitt and smooth gently over your skin in circular motions. I recommend doing this in front of a mirror to ensure your haven't missed any spots.
Bringing Sexy BackAh... the old age fake tanning your back problem. I normally ask Jake to do mine, much to his annoyance! However, I have stumbled across this ModelCo back applicator if you're willing to go it alone.
Erm.. Do I Put This On My Face?
Although you can use your body false tan on your face, I would recommend using a specific facial tan. I use St Tropez Classic Tan Face Lotion. If you have light eyebrows, apply Vaseline to them prior to application to avoid ending up with Ed Sheeran's eyebrows.
Wait It Out
Wait 10 minutes before getting dressed. Then wait the amount of time specified on the bottle. If you're in a rush, I really recommend Model Co One Hour Tan.
I've Got A Lovely Bunch Of Coconuts
Is it just me or does the smell of coconuts bring back memories of childhood holidays? I think this is one reason why my top pick is Bondi Sands Dark Self Tanning Lotion. I have tried and tested so many self-tan products and I can honestly say that this one takes the crown!
Make It Last
Prolong your tan by moisturizing with a tan-infused product. I tan once a week and moisturize with Bondi Sands Gradual Tanning Milk each night. I find that a gentle exfoliation every few days stops your tan from going patchy too.
Finding Your Shade
If your a total newbie, I really recommend starting off with a gradual tan, that way you have 0% chance of ending up like an oompa loompa! Most brands have light, medium and dark shades available. If you are very fair, opt for the light tone. More olive skin tones should opt for dark. If you're not quite sure, mediums the one for you!
Crochet Swimsuit: Lookbook Store* (Get it here for only $23!)
On a side note; how darn awesome is this crochet swimsuit? I adore how feminine and unique it is. I've had enough lycra swimsuits to fill a barrel, so this is a welcome and stunning breath of fresh air.
Now I'm off to apply some tan!
