The Look: I'll Never Be A Minimalist

Color, print and shapes are seriously doing one big party in todays look. It's safe to say that I will never be a minimalist...

 Dress (worn open): Choies (Here)
Lace Top: Mink Pink (Similar Here)
Overalls: Valleygirl (Similar Here)
Shoes: Rubi
Cuff & Rings: Lovisa

As I scroll through yet another perfect monochrome Instagram feed full of perfectly folded white tees on marble tables, a sudden thought pops into my head: 'Seriously, Rach: you will never be this cool.'

I don't lie. It seems that a lot of popular fashion bloggers take a really minimalistic approach to their personal style. At one point last week I had a bit of a meltdown; what's the point of doing this? Maybe I'm not even stylish? The bloggers whose followers are growing are all 'perfectly polished minimalists.'

Say what? I'll break it down for you: A 'perfectly polished minimalist' could be described as a stunningly model-esque babe, with a banging bod and a soft spot for monochrome. She wears a white, Zimmerman shirt dress and a pair of plain slides and looks effortlessly cool. She experiments with shapes, but keeps it timeless. Everyone wants to be her. She could make a Tesco bin bag look cool. Her feed is an oh-so-perfect, seamless meshing of greyscale tones and arty shapes.

And here's me parading through the rainforest, pretending my boho print dress is a cape, dressed in a conglomeration of lace and pastel green overalls, with a big-ass bun in my hair.

I repeat: I will never be a 'cool' minimalist. But I will be myself. And although I may have days where I dress in simple, black pieces, my love for color and print isn't going anywhere.

The stunning minimalists are fashionable and so am I. And the moral of the story, dear reader, is to be yourself.

Peace out!
Rachel

P.s. I even dared to smile with teeth on one photo!

  2. ooh I love how cozy casual and chic this is. The color scheme is really pretty, especially with your rainforest background! I think it's important to stay true to our own style when we're doing this fashion blogging thing. I like to look to others for inspiration, but try as much as possible to trust in my own style inclinations.

    Happy Holidays to you!

  4. Your outfit is amazing! Don't even try to be a minimalist if that's not something you really are :) I love wearing all kinds of clothes and i love to see those "oh so perfect" feed on Instagram but i don't compare my feed to them and i always try to do my best when it comes to photos so if they aren't "oh so perfect" at least i know that i tried my best :D

  8. This is such an AWESOME post, Rach! I agree with you 100% and I can't say the same hasn't crossed my mind either. I love color, print and textures and I can't see myself giving that all up for the sake of being popular or likable. It's me and perhaps that will change one day because we're growing and maturing each and every single day of our lives, regardless of how old we are. But, I don't see that changing anytime soon. I appreciate both the minimalist and bold approaches to style because I can take away something from both. With that, my muse is Olivia Palermo, and has been for years. I love that she's not afraid to play with either styles and always adds that cool 60s/70s flare, that I can relate to. I think that in the end, we'll always find people who we identify with most and people will find us for the same reasons and we can just continue to inspire and encourage each other :)

As for your look and photo location, I LOVE IT! I love the boho vibe of your outfit, which is enhanced by your forest backdrop. Your style is wonderful and very inspiring :)

Again, such an awesome post, girlie, thanks for addressing this because I know it has encouraged me and I know it has done the same for your other readers as well :) Have a wonderful day!

  24. I love ur hair here! I would love to try and re-create this! Hopefully I can. U may need to create a tutorial for me. U have some of the most gorgeous hairstyles! I really suck at braiding my hair lol. That's why I usually just wear it straight or run a curling iron through it.

Rachel, I'm just happy to hear that you're true to yourself and that's all that matters. Trust me I think we all feel like this at one point and compare ourselves to other peoples feed and blogs. Ur unique and that's what people notice and it's what matters. The blogger world is very saturated, but ur not just another blogger posting photos, ur real. You have so much to offer. Definitely smile more with ur teeth! You're so gorgeous! I truly enjoyed reading this post:-).

Thank you for being so honest Rachel.

Hope u have an awesome week!

  32. I LOVE your outfit photos. The locale for the photos, the Mink Pink lace top and the Choies dress are all very pretty. Your facial expressions, poses, and the photos are all fabulous. My favourite from amongst the outfit photos is the flirty second to last photo showing off the pretty print of the Choies dress and the well tailored back of the Valleygirl overalls.
