5 Ways To Look Festive WITHOUT Looking Tacky

The trees up and the tinsels out. We're all making those last few mad dashes to the shops to pick up gifts for loved ones. Maybe the snow is beginning to fall where you are? (Jealous!) Or maybe, like me, here in Australia (my 2nd EVER hot Christmas), it's so darn hot that embellished snowflakes on lighting displays seem like some kind of joke I missed out on.

No matter where we are in the world, we all enjoy spreading festive vibes through our everyday outfits. But with arrays of sparkles and jingle-y bells, it seems quite hard to keep it classy.

Exhibit A: Our fave Mean Girls tack it up! (photo courtesy of picgood.com)

But rest assured that there are ways to inject the holiday spirit without looking like a ho ho ho (see what I did there!)

On The FIRST Day Of Christmas My Wardrobe Gave To Me....
A SPRINKLE OF SEQUINS
Ok, so the key word here is sprinkle. Keep sequins or heavy embellishments to one main item, but feel free to compliment with plainer metallic items.
Christmas Northern and Southern Hemisphere

Team a head to toe metallic jumpsuit or dress with plain and minimal accessories, as shown on this lush catwalk look from Topshop Unique.

As for metallics, they are at the height of fashion, so go ahead and rock out! Here's some festive metallic and sequin inspiration...

On The SECOND Day Of Christmas My Wardrobe Gave To Me....
FESTIVE JEWELLERY
Don't get me wrong, Santa and Reindeer earrings can look really cute, but investing in simple but sparkly green, red and diamante jewellery is a way to add some seasons greetings to your look. Plus: You can wear it for the rest of the year too.

Here's what I use to add a quick dose of Christmas to my look:

Celebrities love rocking these jewels too:

On The THIRD Day Of Christmas My Wardrobe Gave To Me....
CHRISTMAS NAILS
Christmas nail art can be festive, fancy and surprisingly easy. It's time to deck your nails!

Julep have a great tutorial for an easy and classic festive nail look (see below):

I've decked my nails in a festive red polish topped with loose iridescent glitter:

On The FOURTH Day Of Christmas My Wardrobe Gave To Me....
SPARKLY MAKEUP
Instead of injecting sparkle into your outfit, why not don some sparkly, festive makeup instead? Or get the best of both worlds by combining festive makeup with one statement sequin piece.

For an understated day look, combine matte red lips with burnt bronze shadow and white eyeliner. (Photo from blog.themodelstage.com)

If you want something a bit more statement for a night out, try using larger flecks of glitter amongst shimmery shadow for a real- life 'Frozen' look. (Photo from prettydesign.com)

If you're a total novice at makeup, try this perfect sparkly tutorial by Carli Bybel.

On The FIFTH Day Of Christmas My Wardrobe Gave To Me....
NANS XMAS JUMPER
Ah... the Christmas jumper: the cream of the crop when it comes to Christmas tat. The interesting thing with this trend is that the tackier the jumper, the better. So go over-the-top tacky in a Xmas jumper and act as if you don't care what anyone thinks. Embrace it.

  3. Hahaha this made me laugh. You're so right that it's easy to go tacky with holiday spirit. Love the statement necklace around this time of year-- it's the perfect piece to go with winter clothing!

  5. Is it bad that I've never really given much thought to how everyone in the Southern Hemisphere does the whole "festive" thing? I guess it would be the same as in California, where everything's all warm. I agree that metallics and sequin are definitely the way to go!

Hope you're having a great week my friend. Really great post.
