The 7 Deadly Sins Of Style

'A mighty flame follows a tiny spark'- Dante, 'Inferno'

Although many people may not see the immediate connection between an epic poem written thousands of years ago and the matter of style, maybe we should look at this quote. After all, fashion gives us confidence, freedom and beauty- so who is not to say that it is a spark that causes a flame?

Style, like poetry is eternal. And although it is unique, there are some rules that, if followed, will keep you on the right track. So lets journey into the land of fashion sins and take a look at the seven deadly sins of style...

"Your dresses should be tight enough to show you're a woman and loose enough to show you're a lady." —Edith Head

Although crop tops, midriff and leather are undoubtedly hot things in the current fashion world, dressing like you're from the red light district is not. It's all about finding the line between sexy and trashy- show a little flesh, but leave most of it to the imagination. As a general rule of thumb, don't show thighs and cleavage at the same time. Juxtaposing crop tops with maxi skirts and trousers is also a great way to flash some flesh in a way that wouldn't make an old lady pass out.

“Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and remove one accessory.” —Coco Chanel
Stacking necklaces are bang on trend; just don't team this with huge earrings, bangles, rings and numerous belts. There's a difference between accessorizing fashionably and looking like you've tried too hard.

"It’s all about the individual and personal style, wearing high-end, low-end, classic labels, and up-and-coming designers all together."— Alexander McQueen
There's nothing worse than a label snob.... Even if you can afford head to toe couture, you shouldn't snub those who wear high street style. Labels don't necessarily equal style and head to toe obvious logos can make you look like a 50 year old Beverly Hills Housewife. The best way is to mix your Asos with your Armani and throw in some vintage or thrift store items to give your style some edge.

“I know what women look good in. I don’t think the rules ever change.” — Michael Kors

The trick for having impeccable personal style every day is to invest in good quality staples. It's all well investing upon dozens of high-trend pieces every week, but just how often will you wear them? Chances are you would be lost without that LBD or that trench coat. These are the items that are truly timeless and looking timeless is always stylish. Quality over quantity guys.

“Over the years I have learned that what is important in a dress is the woman who is wearing it.” — Yves Saint Laurent

Dress for your figure! Just because you don't have Rihanna-esque abs or Beyonce's butt doesn't mean you can't look stylish. The most important aspect of this rule is knowing your figure and what shapes and styles suit your body. For example, if you have a long torso, high waists are your best friend.

'Delete the negative; accentuate the positive!' - Donna Karan
This ones simple- if you don't feel good in something, don't wear it! Great personal style is all about feeling beautiful on the inside and out. Don't feel like you have to wear high sky heels when they give you temperature rising blisters.

"Sweatpants are a sign of defeat. You lost control of your life so you bought some sweatpants." —Karl Lagerfeld

Sports Luxe may have been featured on every catwalk from Milan to Tokyo, but rest assured sweat pants have to be worn in a certain way to look stylish. No one wants to look like someones mum lost on the way home from yoga class. The trick is to juxtapose loose track pants with tight fitting tops. Also go for luxe fabrics such as silk or chiffon to avoid looking 'lazy'.
