Suzii K: The Designer To Watch

For most young designers, showcasing your first collection during your first year of study is a far off dream. For young Brisbane designer Suzi Knezovic, this dream is quickly becoming a reality. After liaising with the cream of the fashion industry at MBFW, her label, Suzii K is quickly gaining momentum. This is a designer to watch!

I sat down with the 19 year old to get the low down on her new collection and the secret to her success!
Ok, so Suzi your only 19 years old, how do you think you’re gaining so much success at a young age?

It’s really down to networking, talent and drive. In the Fashion Industry it’s not just about how skilled and talented you might be, but also about who you know, what you know and how much do you really want it. I learn t this very quickly and I believe it has given me that step ahead, after just graduating from secondary school last year.

I understand your showcasing your first collection during your first year of uni- that’s pretty rare! How did this come around?

Suzii K: Yes, I have been studying fashion for 12 weeks now and I can just say, I went looking for opportunities, I found within my first 2 weeks I had ticked off my 6 monthly goals and needed to set myself another list of goals.. I realised very quickly that it would be very practical for me to launch my first collection the following summer.

Wow, that's fast! So when did you start the label?

I attended a fashion event back in late March this year, where I made some outfits for my friends and I to wear. I made cards to hand to people to whom seemed interested and basically after that night our outfits received a lot of positive attention and it was presumed I had launched my label. So that’s when I decided to start up a Facebook page, and SUZII K was born.

What makes Suzii K so unique?

I would describe my summer 15 collection, as bringing the old in with the new. I feel it gives a very relaxed vibe while still being quite beautiful. As a summer collection I want my clients to feel calm and cool while looking chic. I feel it’s almost like a breath of fresh air from the bright colours and prints we see come through the summer trends year after year.

What inspires you?

I am heavily inspired by artwork, I love looking at very abstract art, the colours, texture and medium used is inspiring in itself. I’m also inspired by the environment around me and the shapes I come across in my day to day life, from the architecture, to the natural landscape. I am very passionate about merging art and fashion together to create a unique image for my label.

What about designers?

My favourite designers would have to be Valentino; he was the designer who made me realise I want to be a very successful designer and one day follow in his steps. In Australian Fashion I look very much to Alex Perry and Collette Dinnigan. Her success in the industry is very inspiring for female designers wanting to leave their mark in the industry both in Australian and European fashion. I admire Alex Perry’s work very much; he continues to create effortless glamour and pure elegance.

So I understand, your gaining a growing celebrity following?

Yes, after working at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia, I was able to network with some very big names in the industry both internationally and nationally known. These include Margaret Zhang, who I have been following and have been inspired by from the beginning of my fashion journey three years ago. Others include Super Model Cheyenne Tozzi, Jordan and Zac Stenmark, Abbie Weir from ANTM and the list goes on..

I obviously met you at fashion week, which collection was your fave?

Yes, Fashion Week was just incredible; no words can explain my experience. I would defiantly have to say the Swarovski show. It was absolutely mind blowing the jewellery was spectacular the models looked absolutely incredible. I felt very privileged to be dressing Zac Stenmark for the show, it was very surreal.

What's next for Suzii K?

Hmm hard work and determination. At the moment I am taking it step by step, just focusing on the making stages for my summer collection and continuing with my samples line in the lead up to the summer showcase.
